Mitsubishi has a storied past, like many automobile makers, was established in the 1870s, yet didn’t manufacture a car until 1917, when it rolled the Model A off the line, and in doing so, made Japan’s first passenger car. This Japan-based company is headed by the Mitsubishi Group, and is a conglomerate of companies that do a variety of business, but share the same Mitsubishi brand, trademark and legacy. It wasn’t until 1964 that Mitsubishi started making cars on a larger scale, due in large part to World War II, and it wasn’t until 1970 that the Mitsubishi Group set up the sub-division now known as the Mitsubishi Motor Corporation. Both the parent company and the motor company are headquartered in Tokyo, Japan. In 2000, Mitsubishi and DaimlerChrysler reached an agreement for a strategic alliance for cars, but that only last five years, with the split being the result of the tough economic and financial times.
