Jaguar Cars Ltd., better known by the name Jaguar, was founded in 1922, and began as the Swallow Sidecar Company, which as its title states, made motorcycle sidecars, but then ventured into automobile production. In 1935, the name became SS Jaguar, but the “SS” didn’t have the best reception after World War II, so they simplified it to Jaguar. The British luxury automobile manufacturer brought the Jaguar brand to the United States in 1954, and was one of the first British automobile companies to export a car to North America. It then set up its own distribution facility in New York City. The company switched hands a couple times before it became a subsidiary of Ford Motor Company in 1989. It remained with Ford until it was sold, along with the Land Rover brand, to the Indian firm, Tata Motors, in 2008. Jaguar is headquartered in Coventry, England.
