There is more to a glass window than meets the eye. If you’re thinking about replacing your commercial glass windows, you might be surprised to find out there are so many different specifications to choose from. It may look daunting at first, but you should make sure to submit the exact details of your commercial glass windows, when requesting a replacement quote – by doing so, you’ll help us perform the commercial glass window replacement you need much faster and efficiently.
If you’re not quite sure what all those terms in the quote form mean, we’ll now guide you through the selection process. First and foremost, you need to know if your glass windows have a single pane or double pane. This refers to the sheets of glass included in the window, and if you inspect it closely you’ll be able to tell the difference. Double pane windows are more expensive, but they are also much more effective as thermal and acoustic isolation.
The type of glass used in commercial glass windows is usually thermal, tempered and/or insulated.
Thermal glass is a special kind of glass that features low emissivity, which in turn reduces the thermal conductivity of the material. In other words, this glass is treated to keep the inside warmth from escaping through the windows.
Tempered glass is made 4 times stronger than regular glass, so it’s usually employed as safety glazing in exterior commercial windows. Also, this type of glass doesn’t easily break off into sharp tiny pieces like regular glass does. When subject to a heavy blow, tempered glass will just crack into small circular pieces without even shattering off at all, most of the times.
Insulated glass, also referred to as hermetically sealed glass, is comprised of a double pane of glass with a aluminum spacer tube in between. The space within the glass is hermetically sealed to create a completely moisture-free area that further increases the isolation qualities of the window.
Generally speaking, the more expensive a type of glass, the most energy-efficient it will be. If you’re planning to replace your commercial windows, you should be aware of this trade-off: expensive glasses will usually help reduce your heating bills, while cheap glasses may have just the opposite effect.
