Carmakers are always looking at ways of lowering costs and one of the easiest ways is to replace complicated systems with simpler ones. An Italian design company has now come up with an innovative wiperless windshield, which it plans to showcase on a new concept car at next month’s Geneva Motor Show. The new concept is the Fioravanti Hidra, which like many of the designs planned for the upcoming show was designed to showcase next-generation alternative energy powertrains and flexible vehicle architectures.
The windshield on the Hidra relies on aerodynamics and a special self-cleaning coating on the glass that repels water. The coating not only blocks harmful U.V. rays from the sun but it also features ‘nano dust,’ a substance that gives the screen the ability to “push” dirt away to the edges of the glass surface. Once the car is moving at sufficient speed, any accumulated material is simply blown away. According to its developers, the technology could feature in production cars within the next five years.
The new Hidra is in fact just one out of a number of concepts from Italy’s famed design houses and coachbuilders headed to Geneva. Other cars include the Pininfarina Sintesi, IED Chicane and a Giugiaro Concept.
Cindy Rowe Sale to Belron US Closes The sale of Cindy Rowe Auto Glass to Belron US closed today, according to Belron US spokesperson Jenny Cain.
“The deal has been completed and Belron US has acquired substantially all the assets of Cindy Rowe Auto Glass,” Cain told glassBYTEs.com™/AGRR magazine.
The terms of the sale were not disclosed, and Cain says further details will be available next week, once the company has an opportunity to meet with associates in the Harrisburg market.
Belron US had announced in August that it had signed a letter of intent to purchase substantially all of the assets of the Harrisburg, Pa.-based chain, and since August, the company has maintained that the deal was expected to close by end of year.
Cindy Rowe Auto Glass was founded in 1980 as C. Rowe’s Windshield Repair by its namesake, Cindy Rowe-Taylor. Rowe, who was and remains a registered nurse, had decided she wanted to go into business for herself and began performing repairs out of her Chevrolet Vega. In 1987, she purchased an existing auto glass replacement business in Harrisburg, Pa., and integrated it into her existing windshield repair business. Today, the business has 12 locations scattered throughout Pennsylvania and Maryland.
Rowe’s husband, David Taylor, chief operating officer of the company, joined the business in 1986, and is a founder and past president of the National Windshield Repair Association (NWRA).

Geography professor Hans-Joachim Fuchs, a geography professor at Johannes Guternberg University in Mainz, Germany, and 27 students marched out onto a Swiss glacier Monday and drilled post-holes, the first part of a project that will build a solid screen 10 feet tall and 50 feet wide.
Fuchs hopes the screen will trap cold winds that blow down off the mountains and keep them over the Rhone Glacier, the source of the Rhone River which flows west and then south through France into the Mediterranean.
Climate experts think the effort’s pointless, however.
“Even if you built a wind screen big enough, it’s doubtful whether you could meaningfully alter the wind patterns,” Andreas Bauder, a glaciologist at the Swiss Federal Institute of Technology in Zurich, told Der Spiegel.
Fuchs, whose specialty is the climate of the Indian subcontinent, is undeterred.
“One German university is trying out something daring,” he says. “We’ve got lots of sponsors who see that something’s going on here, and they support us.”
British man Martyn Ranyard has been hit with a goose at about 100 mph combined speed, after the goose flew through Ranyard’s windshield whilst he was in transit. Ranyard was in the car with his boss, the driver, and going 70 mph.
He said: “One minute I was sat in the car chatting and the next I saw this huge bird plummeting from the sky. I just froze as I saw it hurtling towards me. It came at me in slow motion like it had been projected straight at me.”
He added that “I didn’t shout out or put my hands up to protect my face. I just closed my eyes and braced myself.” Miraculously, Ranyard was not seriously injured in the incident.

Installation of home windows:
If windows are not tied into the house the windows will move and this will lead to leakage. You need to structurally tie all the products into the home.
Vinyl windows are not structurally tied into a home so if a window does that the entire product and solution is not going to work
